Hi there! I’m Haley, the recipe developer, baker, and photographer here at Flour Covered Apron. Thanks so much for stopping by. I’d love to tell you a little more about me and how this site came to be!
On Baking
Confession time: I have a serious sweet tooth. Probably as a result, I’ve loved baking for as long as I can remember. I just can’t get enough of indulgent desserts and sweet breakfast treats. In fact, a favorite memory from childhood is when my mom and I would occasionally eat leftover apple pie (a la mode, of course) together for breakfast before school. I definitely inherited my sweet tooth and love of cheesecake from my mom!
Growing up, I often made my friends bake muffins or compete in made-up Iron Chef style competitions with me. On Saturday mornings, I would help my dad make pancakes or chocolate filled croissants. And if it was a really special morning, I loved to bake the Dutch Baby recipe from my Magic Spoon Cookbook. In case you were wondering, it did come complete with a big, sparkly purple spoon for mixing.
My goal has always been challenging myself to try different recipes and new techniques; I love learning something new each time I bake. I am self-taught, and I believe anyone can cook and bake delicious food from scratch – no box mixes here! This site began in the hopes of sharing this great adventure that is my love of baking, as well as the recipes I create along the way, with you!
On Layer Cakes
While you’ll find a few different kinds of recipes here on Flour Covered Apron, my specialty is baking cakes.
I believe food is a love language – it’s a way to care for, nourish, and serve someone else. But baking a cake for a loved one can be an extra special way to honor them. It’s a little extravagant, and it makes people feel special and celebrated. A cake always turns an everyday gathering into a party! I love that it has been a reminder to me to find something to celebrate in each and every day.
More About Me
I live just outside of Chicago with my husband, Ben. The Chicago suburbs is also where I grew up and went to college, so it’s definitely home here. Unfortunately, I’ve still never gotten used to the bitterly cold winters!
Ben and I have been married since pi day 2015. We served pie instead of cake! Ben taste-tests all my recipes and does all my dishes (yes, really!!). Together, we love to bike along the Chicago lakeshore, host dinner parties, play board games with friends, and rap the entire Hamilton soundtrack whenever we are in the car.
